Medium chain fatty acids – Octanoic and decanoic acid

Also called caprylic- and caprinic acid

The MCFA developed into one of the most interesting organic acids. In contrast to short chain organic acids (eg. formic acid, propionic acid and lactic acids) the medium chain acids already have an activity in very low concentration against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. But also against yeasts and molds. In different patents the activity in low concentrations (1200 – 3000 ppm) has been confirmed.

In multiple tests a better health, accordingly a better daily increase through a better use of the feed, but also the acids can be achieved. Especially when streptococcus are a problem the MCFA can be the solution. One should already start with MCFA in the feeding of the pregnant sow.

The MCFA are recovered from coconut - and palm oil, and have an equal energy value as vegetable oil.

This means that when using MCFA the energy value of MCFA needs to be considered !

This is also important for the farming economics.

MCFA is a very cost effective way to reach a feed with high energy density which additionally provides a good intestine health. We recommend a mix of MCFDA of up to ca 2,0 – 3,0 kg/ton feed. Sometimes out of cost considerations the optimal amount of MCFA is not used !


Futterkamp: Usage of middle chain fatty acids in the pigs breeding

In the pigs breeding it is important to strengthen the digestive tract and the immunity of the pigs so they can resist properly the stress of weaning, the new environment, the fight for ranking and mostly also the totally new feeding base. Because of this the usage of medium chain fatty acids have been tested in LVZ Futterkamp, Landwirtschaftskammer Schleswig-Holstein







Through addition of medium chain fatty acids to the already acid mixed ready feed the feed intake in the pigs breeding could be significantly improved.

But caution – a too high dosing indicates a clear drop in the feed intake and the consequence is a lower growth. This aspect has been more detailed evaluated in a follow-up test in LVZ Futterkamp, whereby the apparent negative taste influence needs to be balanced. Still usage of medium chain fatty acids under these test conditions have to be considered as economic meaningful.

At delivery also a dioxin certificate is provided. There is no danger, because it is not a mixed product or a rest product. It is the first part of the refinery of fats.
